Let’s Face it – The Content of Turmeric Curcumin Extracts Can Vary

The turmeric curcumin content varies from plant to plant. Naturally, less than 3% of the content of the roots are curcumins. There is none in the leaves or stems of the plant. In concentrated extracts, the content can be as high as 98%.

Since curcumins have been identified as the beneficial compounds, the ones that have anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-amyloid, chelating and antioxidant activity, it pays to know what you are actually getting, when you buy supplements.

If you like to cook with the spice or enjoy the occasional curry sauce, please continue to use it. No risks are associated with consumption in its natural form, in amounts that one would normally use for cooking.

There is concern that the chelating activity could cause iron deficiency or anemia in susceptible people.

Chelating compounds help the body rid itself of toxic metals, but can also interfere with iron metabolism.

If you have ever been anemic, it is best to stick with a small daily dose. The amount that a person would normally eat during a day would not cause a problem.

Because the turmeric curcumin content is so low, concentrated extracts have become popular health supplements, but the price tag on some of these supplements is outrageous.

A very poorly designed supplement costs over $25 per ounce. I say that it is poorly designed because it is a powder and curcumin is not readily absorbed into the bloodstream when it is mixed with water and taken in this form.

Gastric acids quickly degrade the antioxidant. Experiments have shown that taking high doses does not significantly increase blood serum levels.

If it does not get into the bloodstream, it cannot provide the long-term health benefits to all of the cells of the body. All that it might do is provide some protection to the cells of the throat and stomach.

It doesn’t pay to take the expensive turmeric curcumin extract, because the manufacture makes no effort to include other ingredients that enhance absorption.

Piperine, for example, has been shown to increase the absorbed amount by 2000%. It’s not unusual. It has that effect on other nutrients and even on medications.

On the other end of the spectrum are very cheap supplements. You can get the powdered root for $7 per pound. But, the turmeric curcumin content would be so low; it would be of no benefit.

The supplement that I take is affordable and contains a 98% extract that is combined with piperine and includes an enteric coating. I’m sure that I am getting the benefits that I wanted.

Other nutrients are included in the product as well. Some of them are important for cancer prevention. Others protect the health of the heart.

All of the essential vitamins and minerals help reduce my risk of nutritional deficiencies, which is very important in this day and age.

Several years ago, studies in Canada showed that vegetables are not as nutritious as they were 50 years ago.

Studies in the US recently confirmed that conclusion.

It has become impossible to get all of the nutrients that you need everyday through diet alone, without going overboard on calories and causing other health problems.

So, look for turmeric curcumin as an ingredient in a balanced nutritional supplement. It will pay off in the long run.

Improving your health with the best multi-nutritional supplement can have a maximum impact on your health.

So don’t take your health for granted. Take some time and a little effort to do your research because your health is worth it.

Lutein – More Than Just For the Eyes

If you read much about natural ways to improve your health, then you have undoubtedly heard about the health benefits of Lutein. It seems to be the next fad in natural health circles. However, most of the information about it revolves around its ability to improve eye health. Let’s take a look at lutein and see what we can learn.

Lutein is one of over 600 carotenoids found in nature but it is one of only two found in the human eye. The other is zeaxanthin. Carotenoids are the red, orange and yellow pigments that are found in green leafy and orange vegetables. They are also found in egg yolks.

It is believed that lutein protects the macula of the eye from damage caused by blue spectrum light. As we age, its levels in the eye decrease substantially along with the levels of zeaxanthin. This appears to lead Age-related Macular Degeneration. Studies have shown that increasing the intake of both lutein and zeaxanthin can slow down or prevent the onset of AMD, but don’t get the idea that this is the only benefit of carotenoids to the human body.

Some of the other potential benefits of carotenoids on your health include:

1. Protect against the development of skin cancer by providing protection from UV-A and UV-B rays of the sun.
2. Oral supplementation of these two carotenoids improves skin health by increasing moisture content and elasticity.
3. Inhibit hardening of the arteries, improving the health of the circulatory system.

In addition to the eyes, lutein is found in the blood, brain, skin and breast tissues.

The most effective way to increase the amount of carotenoids in your body is through the food you eat. If you are like me though, you probably are not getting enough of the vegetables that have high concentrations of these nutrients.

One thing that stood out in many studies is that oral health supplements were effective in providing the additional amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin that the body requires. However, before you rush out and buy zeaxanthin or lutein supplements there are a couple things you should be aware of.

First of all, when considering products that state they contain these two ingredients, check the quantities. A disturbing trend that I have noticed is that many companies include a small, ineffective amount just so they can state on the label that they are included in the supplement. The minimum amount for lutein should be 10 mg. while you will need at least 4 mg. of zeaxanthin.

Secondly, don’t bother with supplements designed just to address just one area of health concern, such as the eyes. You will typically end up paying much more than you need to for what you get. A multi-nutrient formula is a much better choice. Look for all natural, broad spectrum, multi-vitamins. These are the easiest for the body to assimilate making them much more effective.

Carotenoids such as lutein and zeaxanthin have been shown to improve many areas of health. Since most of us are not getting the amounts that we need through our diet, it is critical that we obtain them through some form of supplementation. Look for an all natural multi vitamin with high enough quantities to improve your health. You’ll feel the difference.

Vitamin Supplements – Do They Work?

Vitamin Supplementation is huge worldwide. Most of us take vitamins now or have taken vitamins in the past. The US ranks top in dietary supplementation globally. 18.9% of Americans had taken at least one dietary supplement in 2004. Over 100 million Americans use vitamin and mineral supplements everyday. The global market has become a multi-billion dollar industry and the dietary supplement sector is growing the fastest.

The most common reason for supplement use is “to improve overall health and general well being.” It is a popular belief that vitamins are antioxidants and can therefore protect us from oxidative stress that causes many health conditions.

The most common supplements taken are:
multivitamin/multiminerals – 22%;
multivitamins plus vitamin C – 15%;
vitamin C as a single vitamin – 13%;
herbal and botanical supplements – 7%;
vitamin E as a single vitamin – 6%.

Over the years, more and more reports on the health benefits of vitamin supplements have emerged, ranging from cardiovascular benefits to cancer prevention. This is mainly due to the antioxidant properties of vitamins that can protect us from oxidative stress. As a result several studies have been conducted to confirm these reports. Some of the latest studies summarized below reveal surprising results to say the least.

One of the very first studies to comprehensively investigate the health effects of vitamin supplements was conducted by Danish researchers in 2007. They performed a meta-analysis on data pooled from several clinical trials which used supplementation of the antioxidant vitamin A, vitamin E, beta-carotene, vitamin C and selenium used as stand-alone or as combination supplements to treat a wide range of health conditions, from cardiovascular disorders to cancer. Their results were a surprising, even troubling. For one, no benefits of these “antioxidant supplements” were found. Second, supplementation with vitamins A and E and beta-carotene (but not vitamin C and selenium) actually increased overall mortality. This study prompted other researchers to take a second look at the benefits of vitamin supplements.

In a more recent review paper, the same researchers performed another meta-analysis of more data from several clinical trials, this time involving over 200,000 people who are healthy as well as those with existing health conditions. The researchers only considered studies which compared the efficacy of antioxidant supplements against placebos in the primary and secondary prevention of different medical conditions. The authors reported that they “found no evidence to support antioxidant supplements for primary or secondary prevention. Vitamin A, beta-carotene, and vitamin E may increase mortality.”

Another meta-analysis investigated the anti-cancer properties of antioxidant supplements, particularly against gastrointestinal cancers. They looked at data of trials which studied beta-carotene, vitamins A, C, and E and selenium. The authors concluded that “we could not find convincing evidence that antioxidant supplements prevent gastrointestinal cancers.”

One of the most recent developments in vitamin supplement research is the long-term SELECT (Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial) study of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The study evaluated the efficacy of selenium and Vitamin E in preventing prostate cancer and enrolled 35,000 male participants in the US, Puerto Rico, and Canada. The participants were randomly assigned to one of 3 groups: group 1 were given vitamin E supplements only, group 2 were given only selenium, group 3 took both supplements in combination, and group 4 were given placebos only. Five years into the study, the NCI decided to stop the trial because of some “concerning” findings, namely:

1. The analysis found no lower risk of prostate cancer in men taking the supplements, either alone or together.

2. Men who were taking only vitamin E actually had a slightly higher risk of developing prostate cancer.

3. Men taking only selenium seemed to have a slightly higher risk of developing diabetes.

Another study evaluated the efficacy of combined folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 in reducing cancer risk among women. Their result show that combined folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 treatment had no significant effect on overall risk of total invasive cancer or breast cancer among women during the folic acid fortification era.

A study published in December 2008 evaluated whether vitamins C and E and beta carotene supplementation have an effect on overall cancer risk. The data was taken from the Women’s Antioxidant Cardiovascular Study and involved 8,171 women who were cancer-free at the start of the study about 9.4 years ago. The findings of the study showed that “supplementation with vitamin C, vitamin E, or beta carotene offers no overall benefits in the primary prevention of total cancer incidence or cancer mortality.”

The Women’s Health Initiative Calcium/Vitamin D Trial evaluated the effects of vitamin D and calcium supplements on blood pressure and risk for hypertension risk of 36,252 healthy postmenopausal women. The women were assigned in 2 groups: one group received a daily supplement of 1000 mg of calcium plus 400 IU of vitamin D3 daily. The other group received placebo only. The researchers reported that “in postmenopausal women, calcium plus vitamin D3 supplementation did not reduce either blood pressure or the risk of developing hypertension over 7 years of follow-up.”

The Physicians’ Health Study II evaluated whether vitamin E or vitamin C have cardioprotective properties that can reduce risk for CVD in men. A total of 14,641 American doctors were enrolled in the study, aged 50 years and older, and were followed up for 8 years. The study results showed that “neither vitamin E nor vitamin C supplementation reduced the risk of major cardiovascular events. These data provide no support for the use of these supplements for the prevention of cardiovascular disease in middle-aged and older men.”

This study evaluated whether antioxidant (vitamins E, C and/or beta-carotene) supplements can prevent atherosclerosis. The researchers performed a meta-analysis of 22 trials which involved 134,590 participants. The researcher conclude that “…the majority of studies included in this review does not support a possible role of antioxidant supplementation in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease … no definite conclusion can be drawn to justify the use of antioxidant vitamin supplements for the prevention of atherosclerotic events.”

Folic acid is routinely prescribed for pregnant women to prevent birth defects such as spina bifida. It has also been thought that folic acid, which reduced the levels of homocysteine in the blood, can prevent cardiovascular disease. Homocysteine is an amino acid used as biomarker for cardiovascular disorder. This trial investigated whether a vitamin combination pill with folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 (vs. a placebo) can reduce cardiovascular risk. It enrolled more than 5,400 American women with a history of cardiovascular disease or with moderate to high risk profile for ccardiovascular disease. After 7.3 years of treatment and follow-up, a combination pill of folic acid, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12 did not reduce a combined end point of total cardiovascular events among high-risk women, despite significant homocysteine lowering.

While most of the evidence from studies summarized here does not seem to support the health benefits of vitamin supplements, there are some studies which indicate that vitamin D supplementation is worthwhile, even essential. Vitamin D is unique because we cannot get our vitamin D requirements from food alone. Instead, vitamin D is synthesized by the body upon exposure of the skin to the sun, thus earning it the title “sun vitamin.” However, since the sun is said to cause skin cancer, people tend to avoid exposure leading to widespread vitamin D deficiency.

American health experts are convinced of the necessity of vitamin D supplements and thus, routinely prescribe vitamin D supplements even for newborn babies. Milk and other dairy products in the US are fortified with vitamin D but not in many parts of the world. Last year, the American Academy of Pediatrics updated its guidelines for vitamin D supplementation to recommend the doubling of the dose for babies and children from 200 IU to 400 IU per day.

According to a review paper, “vitamin D is not only important for calcium metabolism and maintenance of bone health throughout life, but also plays an important role in reducing risk of many chronic diseases including type I diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, deadly cancers, heart disease and infectious diseases.”

In summary, antioxidants in fresh fruit and vegetables have been shown to have extensive health benefits. Unfortunately, except for vitamin D, the use of vitamin and mineral supplementation does not seem to reproduce the protective effect of natural food stuffs, as shown by many different studies summarized here. Worse, some studies even suggest that vitamin supplementation can actually increase risk for certain health conditions and mortalities. Most of the studies cited were long-term randomized, placebo-controlled trials involving thousands of participants. The data they presented are therefore, highly reliable.

The antioxidant supplement pill fits in quite nicely in this era of convenience food and lifestyle on the go. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like a real healthy lifestyle and convenience can go hand in hand. The take home message is, when it comes to nutrition, there is no substitute for natural food stuff. Nature is still the best source of our nutritional needs.

The Recession-Proof Nursing Profession – Why Choosing to Become a Nurse is a Good Choice

The global economic crisis is draining every job market. People everywhere are losing their jobs and are not being hired by anyone else. The entire life support system is crumbling. But experts say that there are some jobs that are “recession proof”. Not only do they not crumble during recession, but they actually offer potential for growth in the present ailing economy and are said to be booming!

The end of 2008 saw industries such as health care and medical experiencing the largest percentage of increase in jobs. Hoards of people are now shifting from their respective jobs, to enter the nursing and health industry. The most common reason behind this is that no matter what the economy goes through, people are always aging and getting sick and requiring medical attention. Health care and medical is currently the top industry, representing 12.92 % of all jobs recruitment. According to surveys, several health care positions experienced the largest percentage increase in jobs. The main positions include medical assistant, admissions clerk and medical records assistant.

It is seen that recession might even be an underlying cause of job growth in the health care industry. People are affected greatly by recession and their health issues are increasing daily. People require more and more medical attention due to increased stress, depression and mental illness resulting from the economic crisis. Aging, increased rates in obesity and technology advancements are all causes of significant growth in the health care industry.

In the year 2009, the health care industry is expected to grow, evolve and welcome new advances in medical technology. New technology breakthroughs will help reduce costs, allowing health care professionals to cater to an increasing number of patients. There is an increase in demand for medical assistants, professionals and nursing aids. There has always been a shortage of qualified nurses and medical practitioners, as sickness, pregnancy, accidents and death never cease to exist even during recession. Life goes on and there is always need for more help from medical professionals. Hospitals and health care facilities need to reduce their hiring costs and keep running efficiently, so the more people opt for a career in the health care industry the better it is.

People are quickly realizing that a wealth of opportunities lay in front of them, in the form of nursing. Within the health care industry and more specifically nursing, there are several areas where nurses are required. Nursing in hospitals is only one small fragment of the sea of opportunities available. There are nursing jobs in large businesses, pharmaceutical and medical equipment companies, government affairs, educational positions, military branches, research, legal fields, and plenty of other industries as well. The job security in the nursing industry is said to be iron-clad. With so many people falling prey to stress-related health issues, there is a growing need for compassionate individuals and caregivers. Today, with a license for nursing, some experience in the field, and the right opportunity, anyone can find a nursing job.

Natural Pain Relief Solutions – How to Know Which One is Right For You

There are millions of people around the world who are in pain right now, ranging from a minor painful irritation to raging, crippling pain which totally debilitates them and completely destroys their lives.

Did you know that pain makes up 32.6% of all serious disease in the Western world… where as heart disease only afflicts 11.2% of the population? In fact, pain is the leading cause of disability in people 15 or older.

Whether it’s back pain, neck pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, joint pains, muscle aches, headaches or any one of the hundreds of chronic pain syndromes that have now been identified, the cost on both personal and family levels, as well as social and economic levels is absolutely staggering.

It is increasingly becoming understood that medications and painkillers are not a real solution to this problem– at best they give temporary relief, and at worst they sweep the symptoms under the carpet while leaving the cause untreated to develop into much more serious and even life-threatening problems.

Many people are now turning to natural pain relief methods as a solution to their problems and health challenges, often with great success; however there are such a bewildering array of options and therapies out there that it can be confusing to even know where to begin looking.

This article is an attempt to cut through some of the confusion and help people to find a natural pain relief solution that is right for them.

In my years as a chiropractor, kinesiologist and natural health expert I have found one thing to hold true with all types of pain…..you must find and treat the real cause!
Sounds obvious, doesn’t it? Yet this is not the way our current medical system often operates- most drugs are designed to block or suppress the pain only, which is why it comes back once the drugs wear off.

Only once the real cause has been identified can you really start making progress in your health. In natural medicine we look at 3 main areas that can affect our health, which we call the “triad of health”.

These 3 main areas are structural (physical), chemical and emotional. Imbalance in any one of these areas will lead to imbalance in the other areas, and ultimately to pain being produced in the body.

Let’s look at each of these areas a little more closely:

Structural – this means all the physical structures and tissues of the body, such as muscles, bones, ligaments, tendons, joints, organs and glands. Damage to any of these tissues will lead to pain, as our body’s way of letting us know that we need to rest that structure to allow it to heal. This damage could be a strain, tear, rupture, or even just something that is misaligned and creating pressure on another structure.

There are 2 main ways that structural damage occurs. The first is trauma, or injury, such as a fall, sporting accident or sports injury. The second way, which is very common, is repetitive micro trauma- basically when something is overused in the same way again and again, leading to wear and tear and damage over time.

Pain that is a result of a structural problem usually requires a physical treatment, such as chiropractic, physiotherapy, osteopathy or massage.

However, the fact is that most structural problems, especially the repetitive strain type, have underlying factors on the chemical and emotional sides of the triad of health, which is why these physical therapies often only have limited success in many cases.

Chemical– Basically there are 2 possible imbalances on the chemical side of the triad- you may either have too much of something (like a toxic or poisonous substance), or too little of something (a nutritional deficiency). Either of these problems will lead to inflammation and weaknesses in the tissues, predisposing you to develop structural problems.

The most common of these problems is toxicity…in fact we find this to be a factor in pretty much all cases of pain that we see in our centre. Unless you live on a mountaintop in the Himalayas and eat only organic food then chances are that you have toxic chemical and heavy metals in your body. We get these from the foods we eat, what we drink, the air we breathe, the cosmetics, soap and shampoos that we use on our bodies…pretty much everywhere in our environment.

Deficiency of key nutrients is also a factor in many cases, even though we have access to a good diet. The sad truth is that due to modern farming, storing and shipping methods many of our foods simply don’t contain the nutrient value that they used to. Combine this with the fact that many processed foods block up our gut and stop us absorbing nutrients properly and you have a recipe for disaster.

Emotional – This is by far the most commonly overlooked aspect of the triad of health. We all know that stress is no good for us, but most people don’t realize just how directly our emotions can affect our bodies, our health and our pain levels.

If you have tried every sort of pill, potion and treatment for your pain without results then this may be the area that you really need to look at. The problem is that many of the emotions that are causing our pain and health challenges are subconscious, meaning that we are not really aware of them. This is because whenever we experience an emotion or situation that our conscious mind is not able to deal with, our subconscious protects us by locking that feeling away at an unconscious level, where it stays until we are ready to deal with it and release it.

One of the easiest and fastest ways to identify and eliminate these subconscious blocks is through the use of kinesiology. This comes in many different forms, but they all use testing of the muscles to reveal what is creating stress in the nervous system, which controls and coordinates all other systems in the body.

Two forms of kinesiology that I have found to be amazingly effective at uncovering and permanently removing these subconscious emotional blocks are Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) and LifeLine Technique.

Often clearing up the emotional side of the triad creates an immediate change in people’s pain levels and allows the healing process to begin on the other sides of the triad.

So how do you know whether the real cause of your pain is structural, chemical, emotional, or a combination of all three?

The best and fastest way to uncover the answers is to consult a skilled kinesiology practitioner. By testing your muscles they will quickly be able to identify where the real problem lies. Once that has been found, it is simply a matter of testing what returns your muscles to strength, which reveals what the body needs to permanently eliminate your pain. The solution may be a physical treatment, a detox or nutritional supplement, or an emotional release such as the ones mentioned above.

Whatever it is, kinesiology can help you to quickly cut through the clutter and overwhelming amount of options available to determine what is the best natural pain relief solution for your pain.

Massage in Bucharest

Recognize it! You’re busy! And so must be! That’s what life is like! But you want more than that, you want to do more for yourself and massage can help. Because massage makes more than a simple relaxation of the mind and body. It keeps your body in shape and gives you enough energy to make you enjoy a longer life better than you do it today.

Massage releases stress. At the moment, stress is a universal evil. Every time you are late, every time you avoid a car in traffic, every time you have trouble working, stress is doing his job. Each time adrenaline increases heart rate and cortisone levels and organs respond to the measure. You will be in a state of nerves and constant agitation.
When there is no release of stress, serious problems such as an upset stomach, hypertension, sleep disturbances, chest pain, or existing illness may worsen.

Some of the changes that may occur are: Anxiety, lack of concentration, depression, permanent fatigue, muscle or bone pain, sexual dysfunction, excessive sleep or insomnia

All these stress-related problems can be diminished and some can be totally eliminated by massage. The researchers concluded that a massage session can lower heart rate and blood pressure, relax your muscles and increase endorphin production. The massage also releases serotonin and dopamine and the result is a general relaxation, both physical and mental.
Our body care must be at the top of the priorities.
By adding the massage to your routine you will look much better and you will be much healthier and relaxed. Massage can improve your vitality and mood. Massage can prepare for a long and beautiful life.

Our masseuses personalize each massage session according to the needs of the individual.
Our massage parlors offer a variety of relaxation styles and techniques to help you. Apart from relaxing, massage can be a powerful ally in reducing pain, increasing energy levels, improving mental and physical performance

We recommend : HotAngels , VipZone , JadePalace , ThaiPassion

After a massage session, you will see how the mental prospects are enriched, the body allows easier handling, better pressure resistance, relaxation and mental alertness, calm and creative thinking.
When you have the impression or force yourself to stay straight, your body is not actually aligned properly. Not only does the posture look bad, but it forces some of the muscles to go muddy all day, while others become weaker. After a long time, the incorrect position may cause other drops. For example, internal organs press on what affects digestion, breathing ability is also diminished, which means that much less blood and oxygen reaches the brain and hence all sorts of other complications.

Massage allows you to return your body to the track. Allowing the body to make healthy and accurate movements is one of the greatest benefits of massage. Massage can relax and restore muscles injured by bad posture, allowing the body to position itself in a natural, painless position.
Apart from posture, there is also anxiety. One of the signs of anxiety and stress can also be heavy breathing. When the body begins to breathe too little and deeply instead of breathing at a natural rithm, it is impossible for one to relax. One reason may also be that the chest muscles and the abdomen get tightened and the air gets harder.

Massage plays an important role in learning the body how to relax and how to improve breathing. Respiratory problems such as allergies, sinuses, asthma or bronchitis are a group of conditions that can benefit from massage. In fact, massage can have a positive impact on respiratory function.

Many of the muscles in the front and back of the upper part of the body are breathing accessory. When these muscles are tight and shorten they can block normal breathing and interrupt effective breathing natural rithm. Massage techniques for stretching and relaxing these muscles improves breathing function and breathability. Massage leads to an opening of the chest as well as structural alignment and nerve dilatation that are required for optimal pulmonary function. A good way to treat respiratory problems with massage is the taping made in Swedish massage. When done on the back, along with vibrations, it can detach the mucus from the lungs and can clean the airways for better later function.

Massage not only relaxes muscles, but helps people become aware of daily stress levels. Once the body recognizes what really means relaxation, the mind can rest easily relax before the stress becomes cornice and harmful. This will help you enjoy a balanced life. Massage controls breathing, allows the mind to re-create relaxation before the occurrence of chronic and harmful stress and increases the level of energy.
